Breastfeeding and Newborn Gas!!!

Many mothers frequently ask me, what did I eat that has made my baby so gassy? Well truth be told it could be a number of things. Remember though that this question usually comes in the middle of the night when all the mom wants to do is sleep and all the baby wants to do is be held, eat, and cry. It is normal for babies to be gassy and just like us when our tummies are rumbling it is not comfortable, so they do the only thing they know: cry!

Everybody farts: newborns, toddlers, young kids, teenagers, young adults, adults, and older adults. The easiest thing to remember is moderation. If you consume a gallon of ice cream or 13 glasses of apple juice, then you and your baby will probably be irritable with gas and diarrhea. Some foods that you are eating can be gas producing for your baby so here is a short list of foods that commonly make babies gassy through your breast milk:

  • Dairy–This includes milk, eggs, yogurt, ice cream, or pudding. If you notice that after you drink cow’s milk your baby is more fussy than when you don’t have dairy, try cutting it out for a few days and see if your baby gets better.
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Beans
  • Nuts
  • Tomatoes
  • Shellfish
  • Chocolate
  • Corn
  • Strawberries
  • Garlic
  • Caffeine

Please remember again that if you eat in moderation you will not see too many issues. Not all these foods will give YOUR baby gas, so eat as you normally would. Pay attention to your baby and if you find that one food gives them gas then eat less of it!

Just like when you were pregnant drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and using illicit drugs are not recommended while breastfeeding!

Check with your health care provider to see if the medications you are taking are safe while you are breastfeeding.
